Geek Chic

Monday, February 22nd, 2010

My life, as much as I resist it, is full of technology. I can’t help it; it’s both my business, and something I enjoy.
I like to imagine that technology is a form of art, that it is creative, and when people look at technology it inspires and is thought provoking.

But I hate keyboards.
They are one of the most ugly things (read: input devices) ever made.

Yet, for some people, they are inspiring.

We Reduce Computer Anxiety

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Computers are complicated beasts. It’s easy to forget how many millions of delicate parts get stuck together to form a business computer, each with their own quirks. The complexity multiplies when you start to use them with other similarly tricky technology, like printers and servers.
So when one little part breaks down, wears out, or doesn’t like being connected to other parts, things tend to fail; Backups don’t run, critical files are lost or deleted or the printer won’t spit out that presentation document you really absolutely need now.
It can lose your business work hours, money and even clients.
These frustrating and often costly situations aren’t unexpected. Think about your system as a small child – leave it alone for too long and it’ll start breaking things. The trick is to minimise the impact on your business by preparing for these technological temper tantrums.
The best way to do this is budgeting for maintenance, upgrades and monitoring. It doesn’t have to cost the world and will save you money in the long run.
